Advanced Planning & Scheduling for SAP-Connected Manufacturing
Advanced Planning and Scheduling helps optimize production planning, scheduling, resource allocation and demand-capacity alignment within SAP-connected manufacturing operations.
WHAT IS ADVANCED PLANNING & SCHEDULING?
Optimized Production Planning Inside the SAP Landscape
SAP Advanced Planning and Scheduling in SAP ABAP refers to functionalities and tools used to optimize and automate production planning and scheduling processes within the SAP system. APS improves efficiency, reduces cost and enhances customer service by helping ensure production resources are utilized effectively and production schedules are aligned with demand and capacity constraints.
SAP ERP & APO CONTEXT
APS Across PP, MM, ERP and Advanced Planning Components
In SAP, APS functionalities are often implemented using modules and components within SAP ERP such as Production Planning and Control, Materials Management and Advanced Planning and Optimization. SAP APO provides advanced planning and scheduling capabilities that complement standard SAP ERP functionality.
Planning & Resource Advantages
- Efficient resource utilization: Schedule production based on manpower, machinery and raw materials.
- Improved production planning: Consider demand forecasts, inventory levels, lead times and capacity constraints.
- Enhanced visibility: Track the production process from order entry to delivery and identify bottlenecks earlier.
Inventory & Customer Service Advantages
- Optimized inventory levels: Synchronize production schedules with demand forecasts.
- Shorter lead times: Reduce inefficiencies and delays across production processes.
- Better customer service: Fulfil customer orders more efficiently and reliably.
- Integrated planning: Connect planning with SAP SD, MM and PP for accurate, up-to-date decisions.

Requirement
APS was being implemented in TEPL. The requirement focused on advanced planning and scheduling as a manufacturing management process where raw materials and production capacity are optimally allocated to meet demand.
Solution
Using SAP ECC and SAP PI/PO, a synchronous SOAP interface construction was created. APS uses a WSDL connection to consume the interface. SAP processes the request from the APS side and sends the requested data back to APS as a response.
DEVELOPED INTERFACES
SAP ECC, PI/PO and APS Interface Coverage
The integration includes interfaces for Purchase Requisitions, Purchase Orders, Planned Orders and Production Orders so APS can request and consume relevant SAP data through the integration layer.
Create PR from APS Data
The Create PR interface provides dynamic Purchase Requisition creation for a given document type. It handles PR item number, material number, plant, storage location, quantity moved in GR/GI, PR unit of measure and delivery date. The custom SAP ABAP function module includes PR creation logic, error handling and testing support.
Open Purchase Orders
The Open Purchase Order interface provides a list of all open purchase orders for a given plant and date range. This supports automated generation of open PO information and smoother external-system integration with SAP.
Open PR from SAP to APS
The Open Purchase Requisition interface provides a list of all open purchase requisitions for any given plant. This gives APS access to open PR data from SAP and supports streamlined procurement planning.
Open Planned Order
The Open Planned Order interface provides a list of all open planned orders for a plant within a from-date and to-date range. This helps optimize production planning operations and improve efficiency across the production lifecycle.
Create Planned Order
The Create Planned Order interface supports dynamic creation using inputs such as planned order profile, material, planned plant, production plant, total planned order plant, order start date, order end date, storage location and MRP area.
Open Production Order
The Open Production Order interface provides a list of all open production orders for any given plant, enabling APS to consume production-order visibility from SAP through the integration flow.
